A magnitude 5.2 quake struck the Caribbean nation this morning where thousands of tourists flock to.

Hotels reportedly shook at the height of the terrifying tremor as holidaymakers on the island were left panicked.

The epicentre was near the city of Santiago, and was felt in neigbouring Haiti which was devastated by a quake in 2010.

An estimated 4million people live in the area affected by the quake.

One worried pal tweeted: “Just heard from a friend in Dominican Republic had an earthquake that shook the whole island.”

A local wrote: “Anyone else just feel an #earthquake in santiago, dominican republic?!”

The quake struck shortly before 2am local time as tourists slept (7am UK time).

The Dominican Republic is prone to earthquakes as the island sits on major fault lines along the so-called “Ring of Fire”.

This is a horseshoe-shaped belt running around the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

About 90% of all earthquakes occur here, with the ring being home to 75% of all the active volcanoes on earth.
