A UK-based source said the military aircraft had been dispatched to investigate the suspected Russian jets, Reuters news agency reports.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) declined to comment on ongoing military operations.

RAF fighters have been scrambled to intercept Russian warplanes headed towards UK airspace in the past.

In January, Russian bombers over the North Sea were intercepted by RAF Typhoons.

The two Blackjack bombers did not respond to requests from air traffic control forcing the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to scramble jets from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, north-east Scotland.

The RAF jets monitored the Blackjack bombers, which came within around 46 miles of the UK, before escorting them away before they could encroach on British airspace.

Footage shot from one of the Typhoons showed the moment the supersonic jets intercepted the Russian TU-160 bombers.
