The two earthquakes — one measuring 4.4 and one 3.4, hit close to La Verne, according to the US Geological Survey.

Thousands felt a sharp jolt which shook buildings and lasted several seconds.

The epicentre was around three miles north of La Verne, in the San Gabriel Valley, 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

US Geological Survey (USGS) said the first quake was followed shortly after by a second one measuring 3.4.

The quake was felt as far away as Sylmar in the northwest and Huntington Beach to the south.

La Verne sits on the San Andreas fault, home to a large number of seismic events.

It lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a disk of earthquakes and volcanic activity around the Pacific Ocean.
