Hurricane Lane: Hawaii braces for DEVASTATION as hurricane upgraded to Category 5

HAWAII is bracing for major Hurricane Lane which is forecast to batter the islands and threatening lives with flash flooding, mudslides and strong winds as it is upgraded to a Category 5 strength hurricane.

Hawaii governor David Ige has signed an emergency proclamation in advance of the hurricane.

AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said even if there is not a direct hit, the hurricane has “the potential of bringing the state of Hawaii serious and perhaps record damage”.

He said: “All residents and interests on the islands should closely monitor Hurricane Lane and pay particular attention to local officials on possible evacuations and preparations.”

Some schools have also been closed until further notice.

Weather experts have warned of potential “record damage”, with authorities clearing camp sites and closing major roads fearing a danger to life.

Hawaii’s County Civil Defence Agency said hurricane conditions of damaging winds, damaging surf and flooding rains are possible within 36 hours.

It said: “A high surf warning with extreme ocean surges and large breaking waves is in effect for south facing shores of Ka’u and Kona.
