Gov Andrew Cuomo has backtracked on his claim that America ‘was never that great’ earlier this week, acknowledging Friday that the comment was ‘inartful’.
The New York Democrat running for a third term as governor who is has also been speculated as a potential candidate for president in 2020 is trying to save face after the gaffe earlier this week.
‘I want to be very clear: Of course America is great and of course America has always been great,’ Cuomo said on a teleconference with reporters Friday.
Cuomo had critiqued President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ at a bill signing in Manhattan on Wednesday.
‘We’re not going to make America great again – it was never that great,’ Cuomo told the audience, which reacted with gasps and laughter.
‘We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.’
The comment was met with a wave of criticism from Republicans in his own state, who demanded an apology and even purchased Cuomo a one-way ticked to Montreal.
Trump blasted the governor in a tweet Wednesday night, writing: ‘”WE’RE NOT GONG TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, IT WAS NEVER THAT GREAT.” Can you believe this is the Governor of the Highest Taxed State in the U.S., Andrew Cuomo, having a total meltdown!’
