KERALA has been hit by devastating flash floods amid landslides and fears a dam could burst its banks in the heavy rains. Here is the latest news and live updates on the Kerala flooding.

Flooding caused by heavy monsoon rains in Kerala has killed at least 97 people, shut down an airport and displaced more than 85,000 people, according to officials in the region in southern India.

Many of those who died are believed to have been crushed under debris caused by landslides.

In dramatic footage coming out of the region, water is seen gushing down the streets in Kozhikode, Kerala, cutting off road links and submerging several villages

India’s Metrological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in the state until Saturday and has issued a “red alert” for 12 out of its 14 districts.

2.50pm update: Bad weather to continue through this weekend

The Met Department in India has warned that the monsoon rains wll pursue through the weekend.

At the moment, floods are bordering on the worst the region has ever seen, and continuing rain could break records.

Thre great floods of 99 were the last record-breaking event, with over 3,000mm of rainfall.

With now well over 2,500 spilled this year, the record could soon be broken.

2.40pm update: University students and Vice Chancellor stranded on campus

Sree Shankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady vice-chancellor, has been stuck at his home for two days.

500 students have also been trapped on campus as the area has been subject to waterlogging.
