Former senior FBI official Peter Strzok, who had a senior role in the Russia and Clinton email probes and was revealed to have exchanged anti-Trump texts, has been fired, his lawyer revealed.
The firing happened two months after Strzok was escorted out of the FBI building after he became a focus of an Inspector General’s report that found the senior counterintelligence official was biased.
The IG investigators uncovered a series of anti-Trump texts between Strzok and fellow FBI agent Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair.
President Donald Trump has regularly railed against the ‘FBI lovers’ on Twitter while bashing the Russia probe, which he brands a ‘witch hunt.’ Trump may have foreshadowed the firing days ago when he tweeted ‘Stay tuned!’
Trump wrote while on vacation at his New Jersey golf club: ‘This is an illegally brought Rigged Witch Hunt run by people who are totally corrupt and/or conflicted. It was started and paid for by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats. Phony Dossier, FISA disgrace and so many lying and dishonest people already fired. 17 Angry Dems? Stay tuned!’
His firing was confirmed by lawyer Aitan Goelman, the Washington Post reported.
The Justice Department IG found Strzok had ‘bias’ but found Strzok and Page hadn’t let their views impact their decisions on cases.
In one text to Strzok before the election, Page asks: Trump is ‘not ever going to become president, right? Right?!’
Strzok responded: ‘No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it.’
The IG had recommended administrative action against Strzok.
‘The damage caused by [Strzok and Page’s] actions extends far beyond the scope of the [Clinton email] investigation and goes to the heart of the FBI’s reputation for neutral fact finding and political independence,” Inspector General Michael Horowitz wrote.
Horowitz testified that the texts ‘clearly shows a biased state of mind.’
Strzok’s lawyer, Goelman, said the firing was abnormal since the director of an FBI disciplinary office had recommended a 60-day suspension.
“This isn’t the normal process in any way more than name,’ he told the Post.
