Hurricane Hector is currently about 1,130 miles (1,820km) east of South Point, Hawaii, and is forecast to cross into the central Pacific today.

Some predictions suggest the storm could be on a potentially deadly collision course with the Kilauea volcano on the southern part of Big Island.

The region is already facing chaos thanks to lava flows, which have been spewing from vents on the volcano’s eastern flank since May 3.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Hurricane Hector is recording sustained winds of 140mph, which are capable of causing devastating damage to populated areas.

Here is the latest news and live updates on the Kilaeau volcano and Hurricane Hector’s path and tracking. All times in BST.

1.13pm update: Hurricane Hector is just 1,000 miles from Hilo

The swirling storm, still at category 4, is just 1,010 miles (1,625km) from Hilo and 1,215 miles (1,960km) from Honolulu.

The storm has now crossed over into the Central Pacific with sustained winds of 140mph or 220kmh.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect as yet.

11.00am update: Kilauea volcano eruption should not be too affected by incoming Hurricane Hector

Parts of Big Island have been devastated by the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano, which began on May 3 and has continued for almost 100 days.

But AccuWeather Meteorologist Jim Andrews predicts there will be minimal added hazards to the region due to Hector.

He said: “While showers can be enhanced at midweek as the hurricane passes by to the south, the risk of acid rain being produced as the downpours hit the steaming lava would seem to be low.”
