Nine people have been shot dead and 51 others injured in Chicago in less than 48 hours with authorities describing the streets as a ‘war zone’.
The spate of deadly shootings took place across multiple Chicago neighborhoods mostly on the West and South sides, from 5pm on Friday to 10am on Sunday.
Paramedics went as far as saying the city was like a ‘war zone’, while police described it as being one of the most violent weekends of late.
In just a two-hour stretch in the early hours on Sunday, 25 people were shot in five different mass shootings.
Thirty-four of the shootings, including five of the deaths, occurred in just 24 hours from 10am on Saturday to 10am on Sunday.
One single shooting in Gresham, a neighborhood in the city’s south side, injured eight people ranging in age from 14 to 35.
The group had been standing in a courtyard just after 12.30am on Sunday when several people opened fire on them.
The youngest person killed was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the face at Lawndale at about 2.30am on Sunday while she was standing on a sidewalk with a group of people.
Five others were injured in that shooting, including an 11-year-old boy who sustained wounds to his leg.
The high number of shootings made it difficult for both police and medical staff to keep track. At one point, police said Stroger Hospital had been placed on trauma lockdown, ABC7 reports.
