More than 46 million people in the US face horrifying flash floods and tornadoes this weekend, according to a shock weather forecast.

Severe weather has hammered states along the east coast of the US, with mounting concerns in Lynchburg, Virginia, over a dam breaking apart.

Officials claim the College Lake Dam could flood the city of Lynchburg under 17 feet of water in just seven minutes if the dam crumbles.

The chaotic weather has also seen a tornado batter New York City, uprooting trees and power lines, while causing widespread damage.

In Charlottesville, a rare tornado ripped through trees and devastated a high school.

Another bizarre weather event saw a giant sinkhole open up in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the weekend, amid growing concerns for the safety of millions of Americans.

Parts of central Pennsylvania received 13cm of rain between Thursday evening and Friday afternoon, which flooded streets.

Meteorologist Jack Boston said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms have repeated over the same locations day after day for the past week resulting in very heavy rainfall totals and flooding.

“The hardest-hit areas have been from the spine of the Appalachians eastward, but it has missed coastal areas including Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston.

“The I-95 corridor is being protected by a large Bermuda high in the Atlantic.”

Meteorologist Kyle Elliot added: “With more heavy rainfall ahead, additional flash flooding along streams and creeks will be likely through the end of the week.”

Lynchburg has already evacuated 150 people due to the danger of the dam breaking.
