Illegal immigration into Italy has been nearly completely stopped, as fewer than 2,000 migrants arriving in Italian ports in the month of July. Compared to the previous July, which was over 11,000, and 2016 seeing 23.552.
“I promised to defend the borders and I am doing it with all my energy and all the means at my disposal,” Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, said on Monday.
Commandant Sebastiano Rossitto, head of the frigate Virginio Fasan since 2015, said that in the last several months the situation has “completely changed,” and “for now the emergency seems to have ended.”
Even main stream Italian media are declaring that “the Salvini solution is working”. Though he has opposition from the Catholic establishment and pro-immigration groups, the resolute leader of the League party is committing “all my energy” to securing Italy’s borders.
Tweeting Monday that cleaning up the mess left to him by the Democrat Party (PD) hasn’t been easy, “but I am happy that after just three months in office results are already apparent.”
