A 4.1 magnitude earthquake has rocked Kilauea’s summit on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The tremor hit the south flank of Kilauea on Monday evening just after 10pm local time (9am BST Tuesday).

The earthquake was felt as far away as the north of Hilo – 32 miles away – Hawaii County Civil Defense said on Wednesday morning, but no damage was reported.

The tremor was weaker than recent summit earthquakes but it was felt more widely, possibly due to its greater depth of 7pm – compared with 2km for summit earthquakes.

Earthquakes have continued to shake the summit area and disturbed the neighbourhoods of Volcano Village.

The agency said: “Earthquakes continue at Kilauea summit and fissure 8 continues to erupt into the channel sending lava flows into the ocean at Ahalanui, creating a large laze plume.”

And the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency reported a collapse event at Halema’uma’u crater at 12.30am with “energy equal to a 4.5 magnitude earthquake”.

The Halema’uma’u crater has now tripled in depth, the summit region of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been closed since May 11.

Jessica Ferracane of the national park said: “This is a historic eruption happening. The USGS told us that nothing like this on Kilauea has happened for more than 200 years.”

“We don’t know how long it’s going to go on? We don’t know, it’s an indefinite. Closure damage is happening every day unfortunately but this is an act of nature.”

Motorists in the area are advised to check connection of gas, electricity and water after earthquakes and possible cracks on roadways for potential damage from earthquake activity.

The agency said: “State highways reports no new cracks on Highway 11, but requests motorists between mile market 28 and 32 stay on the pavement, be alert for changes in roadways conditions, and drive with caution.”
