Nigel Farage has mocked reports today that the British army would have to be deployed to restore calm under a no deal Brexit.

The ardent Brexiteer branded the claims as “utterly ludicrous” as he went on to dismiss the idea as Government-sanctioned scaremongering.

He explained that the public preparations for a no deal scenario were a desperate attempt to persuade Britain to either back staying inside the EU or accepting a soft Brexit deal.

According to the Sunday Times today, the armed forces are on standby to help hand out medicines, food and fuel to vulnerable communities if Britain crashes out without a deal.

Helicopters and army trucks would be used to transport medicines to people in difficult-to-reach areas in the UK.

The military would also facilitate in the event of a disruption at Britain’s ports.

A minister said: “There is a lot of civil contingency planning around the prospect of no deal. That’s not frightening the horses, that’s just being utterly realistic.”

The NHS would also enter crisis-mode, with the health service moving onto a year-round “winter crisis footing”.

Nigel Farage rubbished these reports as “laughable and a joke” during his Sunday LBC radio show this morning.
