Ron Reagan, the son of the 40th president, told a TV audience that President Trump’s supporters are so fanatical they would sooner elect Vladimir Putin than a Democrat.

Reagan, the liberal son of his namesake who is revered by conservatives and by Trump, blasted Trump for speaking ‘incoherent gibberish’ in his speeches.

And although his father struck deals at summits with the Soviets even as he denounced their aggression, the younger Reagan blasted the way Trump’s base appears to be softening on Russia – while faulting their antipathy for Democrats.

‘If you think about Trump’s base – they do like Putin,’ Reagan said. ‘If you look at the polls, Putin’s popularity has gone way up,’ Reagan said on ‘Hardball,’ Chris Matthews’ show on MSNBC Thursday.

‘The most important thing to them [is that Trump] seems to hate the same people that they hate,’ he said, the Hill reported.

‘If it was left just up to Trump’s base, they would elect Vladimir Putin as president of the United States over virtually anybody with a ‘D’ after their name. And I’m not kidding you,’ Reagan said.

The former radio host went after Trump for speaking ‘incoherent gibberish’ and ‘word salad.’

‘They’re still shouting ‘Lock Her Up’ at these rallies, he complained. ‘It is going to get worse, mark my words,’ he said.

Reagan said Trump’s base voters take cues form him both on who to hate and who to love – right before the White House announced Putin would visit the U.S. after January and that Trump was open to a formal invitation to Moscow.

‘It goes hand in hand. If Trump seems to love Putin, they’ll love Putin, too,’ Reagan said.

The number of Republicans calling Russia an ally nearly doubled between 2014 and 2018, according to Gallup.
