The Hawaii volcano, Mount Kilauea, shows no signs of simmering down in its third month of continuous eruption, as geologists revealed there is enough magma still underground for volcanic activity to continue “for months or years”.

New video footage shows a torrent of fast-moving lava flowing at over 14 miles per hour from Fissure 8 and engulfing a nearby road.

The river of lava now covers 12.5 square miles and stretches 8 miles to the sea.

Hawaii’s Big Island has grown by nearly 700 acres, the equivalent for more than 500 football pitches, local sources confirmed.

Molten rock flowing into Kapoho Bay has cooled and solidified as it reaches the sea, creating the new land.

Volcanic activity has destroyed more than 700 homes since Kilauea first started to erupt on May 3.

More than 2,000 islanders were forced to evacuate as lava threatened their homes, and many remain in emergency temporary accommodation.
