A strong tremor around 1km deep was felt at around 2.35pm in the Newdigate and Charlwood areas.

It makes it the sixth earthquake in four weeks in the Dorking and Gatwick Airport area.

The British Geological Survey said two quakes had been recorded within 12 hours in the Surrey area.

The first was recorded in Newdigate at 4.59am this morning with a magnitude of 2.0.

This afternoon, a second earthquake measuring 2.7, has been recorded in the same location.

One local said on Twitter: “That was a terrific earth tremor here in Newdigtate – strange rumbling noise, earth tremor and whole house and ground shook… scared me!”

Another said: “I was practising my flute when I could hear this boom. My son was upstairs and came down to say ‘what the hell was that’?

“It woke him up, it was quite frightening.”

The earthquake – which may be followed by aftershocks – was said to have lasted around six seconds as houses and flats rattled and furniture was moved.
