Speaking after their meeting at Chequers, the US president said the relationship between America and the UK was “indispensable” and the “highest level of special” as he added Britain was a “special” country to him because his mother was born there.

He said “whatever you do is OK with me” about the UK’s plans for Brexit, but added: “Just make sure we can trade together”.

Mrs May echoed this sentiment by saying she was keen to deepen cooperation between the UK and US, promising both countries will pursue an “ambitious” trade deal.

It comes after Mr Trump’s explosive nterview where he suggested Theresa May may have jeopardised the long-promised trade deal between the US and Britain.

But Mr Trump backtracked and said he “didn’t criticise” the Prime Minister, as he insisted he had a “lot of respect” for her.

The US leader also praised Mrs May as a “terrific woman” and said she was “doing a good job” over Brexit.

He said Brexit-bashing interview was “generally fine” but missed out his positive comments about Mrs May, adding that the White House records all interviews.

Mr Trump said: “It’s called fake news and we solve a lot of problems with the good old recording instrument.”

The Republican firebrand said he believed it was possible to do a trade deal with the UK after Brexit.

He said: “The only thing I ask of Theresa is that we make sure we can trade and we don’t have any restrictions because we want to trade with the UK and the UK wants to trade with us.
