A Tory MP has sparked fury by tweeting a ‘racist and Islamophobic’ image of Sadiq Khan as a pig engaged in a sex act.
Michael Fabricant took aim at the London Mayor as he condemned protests against Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.
Mr Khan has given permission for a giant ‘Baby Trump’ blimp to be flown over Westminster later.
But Mr Fabricant posted a deeply offensive picture that shows the US president laughing in front of two blimps having sex – one of which has Mr Khan’s face on it and the other is a pig.
A caption reads: ‘Breaking news: Trump defeats Sadiq Khan in balloon wars.’
Mr Fabricant added: ‘Well, what can I say.’
The Lichfield MP deleted the image last night after a wave of condemnation, with Labour MPs pointing out that it was particularly offensive as Mr Khan is muslim. Pigs are considered to be unclean animals in muslim culture.
Mr Fabricant insisted he had not noticed Mr Khan’s face on the image.
But Labour’s Luke Pollard said: ‘Disgusting. Tweeting racism is not a good look for a Conservative MP when there is a real problem with Islamophobia in the Tory party.’
Fellow backbencher Chuka Umunna said: ‘Can’t believe @Mike_Fabricant tweeted that vile, islamophobic image of @SadiqKhan – thought it was a spoof. He has just deleted it. Describes himself as an ‘MP dude’ in his twitter profile but is clearly an ‘MP idiot’.’
