Japan landslide: 11 dead and 45 missing as Typhoon Maria strikes

AT least 11 people have been killed and another 45 people are still missing following torrential rains that battered western and central Japan as Typhoon Maria strikes.

More than 1.6milion people have evacuated from their homes as Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued special weather warnings for what it called “historic” rains.

The weather front may have settled between western and eastern Japan, but there is still a risk of landslides, rising rivers and strong winds.

The main island of Honshu is already set to face more rain for the rest of the weekend, Japan’s NHK national TV station reported.

In Montoya, a town on Shikoku island had 58 centimetres (23 inches) of rainfall between Friday and Saturday morning.

One man in the western city of Hiroshima died after falling off a bridge into a river and another man in Takashima was killed after being swept into a canal while trying to remove debris.

Two others were found dead after being found in buildings that were hit by landslides.

And a 95-year-old woman was found in her house after part of a nearby mountain collapsed.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said about 48,000 police, firefighters and member’s of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces were responding to more than 100 landslides and other appeals for help.

Photos show the scale of destruction as factories were destroyed, homes submerged, trees fallen onto cracked roads and cars washed away.

The death toll yesterday was four.

By this morning more than 1.6million were forced to evacuates their homes amid severe floods and more landslides and another 3.1million people have been advised to leave, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Officials have warned Super Typhoon Maria will hit eastern China and the Korean Peninsula next week, with officials placing the East on high alert.
