The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is on high alert in the Golan Heights near southern Syria as the civil war between Assad and rebels seeking to oust him threatens to spill over the border.

Israel is gearing up to deal with any threat to its sovereignty by reinforcing units stationed in the Golan Heights with armored and artillery forces.

“The forces deployed this morning as part of preparations and readiness in light of developments on the Syrian Golan Heights,” Israel’s military said in a statement.

The IDF said the policy of not directly intervening in Syria’s civil war would be maintained despite the proximity of the fighting across the border.

The statement contained: “The IDF attaches great importance to maintaining the separation of forces agreement between Israel and Syria of 1974.

“In addition, the IDF will continue to insist on the principle of non-involvement in what is happening in Syria, alongside a policy of resolute response to the violation of Israel’s sovereignty and risk to its residents.

“Humanitarian assistance has been provided by Israel for years and continues today as needed.”

The fighting between Assad’s regime and rebels is concentrated in the Daraa region near the Jordanian and Israeli border in southwestern Syria.
