Wil Okabe, County of Hawaii managing director, made his remarks in the midst of more seismic activity from Fissure 8, which has seen more lava flowing into the ocean.

He said: “It’s obviously been a very challenging time for everybody on the island.”

Mr Okabe said Hawaii Governor David Ige has spoken to US President Donald Trump, who had subsequently signed an emergency proclamation meaning people affected could claim financial relief from the Federal Emergency Relief Agency (FEMA).

He added: “We have close to 1,000 people who are registered for aid from the federal government and about 600 in shelters.

“This situation is unprecedented in my lifetime and very usual.

“We have rivers of magma flowing into the ocean.”

In addition, noxious fumes were continuing to pose a hazard, he said, adding: “Vog, Pele’s hair and laze are real threats and that’s a big concern.

“It depends on the direction of the wind – if it’s blowing out to sea, it’s not a problem but if it blows inland, that’s when we have difficulties, and people are advised to stay indoors.
