THERE are fresh fears the Yellowstone super volcano is due to erupt after boiling water exploded from a previously dormant geyser.

The Steamboat Geyser is now one of the world’s most active after erupting 10 times in three months.

Prior to this, it had only spat water around 10 times in over three decades.

Wendy Stovall, of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), said: “There’s been a lot of hype about the Supervolcano of Yellowstone and the potential for a super-eruption.”

But she added monitoring equipment does not show an imminent eruption.

But this hasn’t stopped speculation the volcano is getting ready to blow.

A super-eruption would have devastating consequences, with lava covering hundreds of miles and a giant ash cloud potentially triggering a nuclear winter.

It has previously been estimated that millions of people could die during this stage due to food shortages and freezing weather.

The last time Yellowstone erupted was around 70,000 years ago.

The USGS addressed the active geysers in a statement, saying: “Major eruptions over the past several weeks have been occurring with surprising regularity (every six to eight days), and the nine eruptions in 2018 ended a period of quiet that lasted 3.5 years.

“Most of the 2018 eruptions occurred at night or during times when the area was closed to visitors.

On June 4, however, the geyser put on a show starting at about 9 a.m. And USGS scientists were on site to witness the spectacle.

“The eruption began with what is called the water-phase.

“On this particular day, the water-phase lasted for around 30 minutes. Hot, silica-rich water erupted to heights beyond 200 feet.”

It added: “After 30 minutes, Steamboat entered into what is called the steam-phase.

“Here, the eruption is dominated by the high-speed ejection of steam with a sound that reminds one of a jet engine. This phase can last for hours to days.”
