HAWAII (INTELLIHUB) — More than 576 homes have been destroyed by earthquakes disastrous lava flows in the Kilauea region of the Big Island.
As the crater at Kilauea’s summit continues to widen, scientists say they have clocked lava flows exiting fissure number 8 at speeds in excess of 20 miles-per-hour.
Toxic gasses and debris are affecting the air quality withing a three to five mile radius of fissure vents and the main crater where gas escapes at temperatures as hot as 2300° F.
Experts believe that pressure in the crater will continue to build and eventually release in a a massive explosive blast.
Likewise, being exposed to the gases is not a great idea either.
Over 894 families have applied for FEMA assistance.
Residents should remain vigilant.
