The powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake ripped through the Japanese city of Takatsuki, in the Osaka Prefecture, in the early hours of Monday morning.

The video shows enormous tremors rocking vans violently on their axels and setting off alarms.

The earthquake closed local airports for several hours, while train lines were interrupted and factories were forced to halt production.

However, local authorities confirmed there was no tsunami warning and nuclear plants in the area are operating normally.

The earthquake struck at around 7.58am local time (11.58pm UK time)

The tremors measured magnitude 6.1 on the Japanese earthquake scale and trackers at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake as magnitude 5.3.

A nine-year-old girl and an 80-year-old man were killed by collapsing walls and a third elderly man in his 80s died under a fallen bookcase.

Several people were trapped in elevators and roads were cracked with broken pipes spilling water.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to deal with the fallout of the earthquake, which has left at least 110,000 Osaka prefecture residents without gas, quickly and effectively.

He said: “The government will act as one to deal with this earthquake in Osaka, making human life the top priority.

“The first step is moving quickly to bring damage under control.”

Authorities warned residents to brace for potential aftershocks in the following days.
