The powerful earthquake struck at a depth of around 15.3km (9.5 miles) around 7.58am local time on Monday (11.58pm UK time on Sunday).

The earthquake’s epicentre was tracked just outside of Takatsuki but tremors were felt through the cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe on Japan’s main island of Honshu.

The tremors measured magnitude 6.1 on the Japanese earthquake scale and trackers at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake as magnitude 5.3.

Japanese authorities have so far confirmed three fatalities and at least 243 people were injured, public broadcaster NHK said.

A nine-year-old girl and an 80-year-old man were killed by collapsing walls and a third elderly man in his 80s died under a fallen bookcase.

According to Kate Kilpatrick, a 19-year-old American staying in an Osaka when the cataclysm struck, the earthquake took everyone by surprise.

She said: “We were sleeping and it woke us up abruptly.

“It was so terrifying because this is my first earthquake.
