The Hawaii volcano Mount Kilauea’s devastating lava flows have so far covered 8 square miles and destroyed more than 600 homes.

Aerial footage from the Hawaii County Civil Defence shows a lava flow spreading miles across the Big Island and spilling out of channels.

The shocking video shows lava spew from a tissue and travel for miles along the Hawaiian island.

The smouldering can be seen surrounding homes on the coast that had previously been narrowly missed by lava flow.

As the lava hit the Pacific Ocean it released a hazardous haze. A Hawaii county spokesman said: “Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume.

“Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.

“Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation.

“Be aware that the laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning.”

Mount Kilauea has displaced over 2,000 people as lava continues to cover parts of the Island.

Harry Kim, Hawaii County Mayor, outlined the huge amount of destruction in the region.

He said: “If you combine the three of them, Kapoho, Vacationland and Leilani, we’re talking about 600 homes.
