THE WORLD is entering an arms race for stronger and faster hypersonic missiles which is in danger of plunging the planet into a new Cold War, an expert has warned.

Hypersonic missiles can travel faster than the speed of sound, making them incredibly hard to stop.

As Philip explained: “As these new hypersonic weapons are developed, they will make Donald Trump’s missile defences obsolete”.

Hypersonic missiles can travel to a target in almost half the time a traditional intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can.

Philip said: “If an ICBM could get to its target in 30 or 35 minutes, a hypersonic missile might get there in 20 minutes.

But, Philip added, this is still dependent on the mode of delivery — how the missile is transported to within range of its target — and its trajectory.

Recently, Russia developed the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, a mammoth step forward by Putin.

But Philip explained the fact it needs to be launched from an aircraft will hinder the Russians.

“Hypersonic missiles launched from an aircraft require the aircraft to get close enough before launching,” he said.

“This takes time and means the missile isn’t hypersonic throughout all of its travel time.

“Boost-glide hypersonic missiles fly straight up at first, then turn back down and level-off to travel at hypersonic speeds closer to the earth.
