RESIDENTS near Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano have been warned they may have to evacuate “with little notice” as a result of a large stream of lava flowing in the Pacific Ocean which has raised levels of noxious sulphur dioxide, public safety officials have warned.

One of the most active areas, fissure 8, continues to produce a large channelised flow to the ocean at Kapaho.

A spokesman for the County of Hawaii said: “There is currently no immediate threat, but residents close to the active flow should stay alert to changes in the flow direction and be prepared to voluntarily evacuate with little notice.

“Heed warnings from Civil Defence officials.

“If you feel the effects of sulphur dioxide exposure shelter-in-place or leave the immediate area.

“You can monitor sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide on Hawaii Island by visiting the Civil Defence website.

“The shelter at Pahoa Community Centre is open and pet-friendly.

“The Keaau Armoury shelter has reached capacity.”

In addition, the United States Geological Survey’s Hawaii Volcano Observatory has warned of a vigorous eruption of lava from the Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system near Leilani Estates, reaching heights of 200 feet.

A spokesman said: “Today’s evening observation flight reported no significant changes in the fountain or in the channels carrying lava to the ocean at Kapoho.

“Minor flows overtopping the channel levees have been observed today, but no significant breakouts have occurred.

“The ocean entry area continues to produce robust plumes. Observers also noted vigorous convection taking place up to 0.9 miles offshore from the entry points.

“Minor activity at Fissures 16/18 continued.”
