Masked activists, some of them carrying flags with the communist hammer and sickle symbol, took to the streets ahead of the G7 meeting.

Other protesters set off flares and set flags on fire, as riot police carrying shields tried to diffuse the situation.

The violent scenes come after a group calling itself the Anti-G7 Resistance Network urged supporters to hold a “day of disruption”.

In a post on its website, the group railed against the “global elite” and the G7’s “imperialist and colonialist countries”.

The post added: “It’s a special occasion for the global elite to celebrate their dominance of the capitalist economy in style.

‘On June 7th, join us for a festive mass demonstration against the G7, capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism, racism, and borders!

“Let’s speak out against the environmental destruction caused by the relentless exploitation of natural resources.

“Because our world can and must be better for everyone who lives in it and for generations to come!”
