The earthquake struck just three miles from the volcano which has been erupted constantly for over a month.

The active volcano has been spewing molten lava, toxic gases, and spreading fissures since May 3.

It has displacing thousands of residents across the island.

The quake struck at 2.44am local time.

Kilauea, the most active of Hawaii’s five volcanoes, is feared to be on the brink of another major eruption after being rattled by more than 500 earthquakes over the weekend.

The latest seismic activity will fuel fears the volcano could unleash another massive explosion of lava and poisonous gases.

Most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park remains closed due to persistent earthquakes and eruptions of corrosive volcanic ash.

Kilauea, standing at 4,091 ft (1,247 metres) tall, has now been erupting for 34 days in a row, the longest since 1955.

Lava flows have knocked out telephone and power lines, causing widespread communication outages.

It has forced the shutdown of a geothermal energy plant that normally provides about a quarter of the island’s electricity.

Plumes of volcanic ash belched into the air by periodic daily explosions from the crater at Kilauea’s summit have posed an additional nuisance and a health concern to nearby communities.
