Guatemala volcano Fuego has left hundreds of people still missing after it erupted violently on Sunday blanketing nearby communities with ash.

Shocking footage has emerged of residents trying to escape the giant ash cloud produced by the deadly volcano.

In the footage, a man, who appears to be in an emergency vehicle, records the ash rise into the sky, before realising the dark smoke is heading towards the car.

The gigantic ash cloud quickly engulfs the car before only dark smoke can be seen from the camera.

At least 99 people were killed by the Fuego volcano eruption and hundreds were injured, which many in the area still listed as missing.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes after Volcan de Fuego, which means “Volcano of Fire,” exploded on Sunday.

The Central American country’s disaster and forensic agency Inacif on Wednesday afternoon raised the death toll to at least 99, up from 85.

Of the 99 bodies found, only 25 have been identified so far.
