This shocking footage shot from a Hawaii Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk shows the dramatic scenes of Hawaii’s Big Island as Kilauea continues to erupt.

The aerial night footage shows a red-hot river of lava extending past the reach of the naked eye with fissures continuing to ooze molten rock.

Lava can be seen bubbling up and producing fountains beyond 100ft, as the volcano enters its 34th day of continuous eruption.

Hundreds more homes have been destroyed and a morning overnight flight on Tuesday confirmed lava had completely filled Kapoho Bay, inundated most of Vacationland and covered all but the northern part of Kapoho Beach Lots, scientists at the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Tuesday was the most destructive day since Kilauea began its last episode of eruption on May 3.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said in an update at 6am local time on Wednesday (5pm BST) “vigorous lava eruptions continue” as a growing river of molten rock flows from a fissure at the foot of Kilauea.

The agency said: “Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that vigorous lava eruptions continue in the lower East Rift Zone.

“Fissure 8 is very active and producing a large channelised flow that has filled Kapoho Bay.

“The ocean entry is sending a large laze plume into the air along the coastline.”

The agency warns residents volcanic gas emissions remain very high from fissure eruptions.

Buildings destroyed by the ongoing eruption stood at 117 on Monday, mostly homes.

About 80 of those were destroyed in the Leilani Estates community, where lava-spouting fissures in the ground first opened on May 3 downhill from the volcano’s eastern flank.
