Christian Kachin people, who mainly live in the northern mountains of the country close to China and India, are being targeted in a new genocide campaign in Myanmar.

The national military have been accused of using helicopters and artillery to bomb the Kachin people, who do not accept the new name of Burma, Myanmar.

This comes after 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have been persecuted by the country’s military in western Myanmar and forced to flee to Bangladesh.

Kachin rebels have claimed one in eight of their population have been displaced by the military.

The Kachin people are fighting for independence and have been doing do since 1948 when Burma became independent from the British.

An in-depth investigation saw Sky News speaking to the Kachin people who spoke about being forced to move homes many times so they could reach safety.

Lashi Ókawn Ja, mother, said: “I am convinced the Burmese government is trying to ethnically cleanse the Kachin people.

“Whenever they see Kachin people they try to kill us and they rape the women, even the women who are pregnant.”

The vice president of the Kachin Independence Council (KIC), General Sumlut Gunmaw, said: “Maybe their actions against us are not so sudden as their violence against the Rohingya, but their intentions are just the same. They want to eliminate us.”
