A CATACLYSMIC Californian earthquake could kill hundreds and leave 250,000 to 400,000 people stranded without a roof over their heads, scientists have warned.

Magnitude seven earthquakes and higher could be enough to displace hundreds of thousands of residents from the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Such monstrous tremors along the Hayward Fault Zone would raze entire neighbourhoods to the ground.

Earthquake experts fear such a quake would create an incredibly disastrous refugee crisis along the West Coast.

Ken Hudnut, science adviser for the United States Geological Survey (USGS), said the Hayward Fault runs under major cities like Berkeley, Oakland, Fremont and Hayward.

Another 250,000 residents face potential eviction if a seven magnitude plus earthquake strikes along the San Andreas Fault line in Southern California.

Keith Porter, USGS earthquake expert, warned the exodus of refugees would mirror that of the deadly Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

He said: “So many people will be displaced they won’t be able to stay within the metro area.

“So they’ll move away, just like they moved away from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.”

In the hypothetical event of a magnitude seven-plus earthquake striking California, some 20,000 people will be immediately trapped in elevators, more than 400 fires will break out and East Bay residents could lose access to tap water for at least six months, a USGS report warned.

Total loses across the area would mount up to excesses of £74.68billion ($100billion) and strong aftershocks could rock California for years to come.

Further complications would arise from the lack of power, cut supply lines and limited access to health services.

Destroyed buildings and abandoned businesses could have a major economic impact on the area for years to come.
