Residents in Pahoa observed the spectacular display of Big Island volcano’s fury when boiling lava exploded from its fissures, as locals scrambled to safety while magma swept into their homes.

The last group of Big Island residents were evacuated from their homes, just hours before molten lava flowed into highway, blocking off a residential estate.

National Guard troops, police and firefighters ushered the group of evacuees from the easter tip of Hawaii’s Big Island early on Saturday, before Kilauea’s volcano cut off road access to the area.

A fast-moving stream of lava, as wide as three football fields, flowed over a highway near a junction at Kapoho – a seaside community that was rebuilt following Kilauea’s destructive eruption in 1960.

According to the Hawaii County of Civil Defense agency, the lava blocked Kapoho from the rest of the island, which would have left locals stranded between raging lava if they did not evacuate.

On Saturday, a freshwater lake was completely boiled away, after lava flowed into it and “evaporated all the water”.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported on its website: “At 10 AM, lava entered Green Lake within Kapoho Crater producing a large steam plume.

“By 1:30 PM the steam plume had ceased and by 3 pm, a Hawaii County Fire Department overflight reported that lava had filled the lake and apparently evaporated all the water.”
