Ormat Technologies, who owns a geothermal plant near Hawaii’s erupting volcano, have said lava has destroyed a substation and warehouse that stored a drilling rig.

The company said in a statement on Thursday evening that the main access road to the plant has been covered in lava.

The buildings were allegedly destroyed on Wednesday and on May 28, two geothermal wellheads at the plant were submerged with lava.

Authorities ordered “mandatory orders” for residents yesterday with the Mayor of Hawaii Harry Kim Tweeting: “Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports vigorous lava eruptions continue in Leilani Estates & Lanipuna Gardens and rapid flows could result.

“Honolulu Fire Department has evacuated residents on Papaya Farms Rd & Noni Farms Rd.

“Residents of Vacationland and Kapoho Beach Lots must complete evacuation by 6pm, June 1 or risk being isolated.

“Residents have until noon Fri June 1 to evacuate.

“Persons remaining in mandatory evacuation area do so at own risk and emergency crews may not be able to respond.”

Around 2,000 people have been evacuated since eruptions started on May 3 and roughly 75 homes have allegedly been swallowed by molten rock.

US Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Wendy Stovall believes lava and fissures activity is showing no signs of slowing down.

She said: “We don’t see any changes occurring.”

The volcanologist also believes Kilauea’s latest upheaval should be classified as a separate volcanic event, though an official determination has yet to be made.
