The shock explosion from Indonesia’s most active volcano on Friday follows weeks of uncertainty surrounding the volcanic site.

Mount Merapi’s previous eruption on the 24th May forced local officials to raise the alert to its third highest level, including a no-go zone of the 3km radius of the crater.

The eruption yesterday, which spewed a column of volcanic ash 6km high, triggered an alert notice for all passenger planes in the area.

The volcano sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic and volcanic activity that experiences thousands of tremors every year due to tectonic plate faultlines.

The eruption yesterday morning only lasted two minutes but was followed by a series of terrifying tremors.

A spokesman for the national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the eruption yesterday morning had seen the ash spread west of the crater.

He added: “The red alert of Vona (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) has been issued.”

Officials added that three forest areas have been charred by the eruption near to the crater.
