HAWAII residents hit by Kilauea Volcano’s “vigorous lava eruptions” have been ordered to leave their homes within 24 hours or face possible arrest from police – here are the latest mandatory evacuations zones mapped after officials warned lava flow speeds were speeding at the rate of six football fields an hour.

Big Island mayor Harry Kim ordered the non-negotiable evacuation of a 17-block swathe of Leilani Estates, saying residents had to evacuate by noon on Friday local time (11pm BST).

The areas lies in a slightly larger zone where voluntary evacuations were already being organised.

Mayor Kim wrote two messages on Twitter stating: “HVO [Hawaii Volcano Observatory] reports vigorous lava eruptions continue in Leilani Estates & Lanipuna Gardens & rapid flows could result.

“HFD has evacuated residents on Papaya Farms Rd & Noni Farms Rd. Residents of Vacationland & Kapoho Beach Lots must complete evacuation by 6pm, June 1 or risk being isolated.

“Residents have until noon Fri June 1 to evacuate. Persons remaining in mandatory evacuation area do so at own risk w/ knowledge that emergency crews may not be able to respond.”

The dire order was announced a day after police arrested a 62-year-old Leilani Estates resident who fired a handgun over the head of a younger man from the same community.

In the incident, which has since gone viral, the man apparently believed his neighbour was an intruder or looter.

Around 2,000 people have been evacuated since eruptions started on May 3, while 75 homes have been swallowed by molten rock.

These latest map below shows the mandatory evacuation zones.

United States Geological Survey (USGS) scientist Wendy Stovall geologists believe lava and fissures activity showed no signs of slowing down.

She told reporters on Thursday: “We don’t see any changes occuring.”

The volcanologist also believes Kilauea’s latest upheaval should be classified as a separate volcanic event, though an official determination has yet to be made.
