Brad Clark, Director of Nuclear Policy at the Office of the US Secretary of Defence, said the increasing sophistication of missiles possessed by hostile nuclear-capable states is a cause for concern in Washington.

The Pentagon, under US President Donald Trump, is especially “worried” about computer guided cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles that can reach staggering speeds of Mach 5 or 3,5000 mph, Mr Clark said.

Mr Clark raised his concerns while discussing the Trump administration’s approach to missile defence at home and abroad at the RUSI Missile Defence Conference in London.

The US Department of Defence is expected to release its comprehensive Ballistic Missile Defence Review (BMDR) later this year.

The highly-anticipated document, which was expected to be released in February, will outline Trump’s plan for missile defence posture on the US mainland and across the world, influencing the policy stance of Russia and NATO.

The BMRD is still in daft, and it will be issued when it’s issued,” Clark said to an audience of academics and policy makers.

Since 2010 – the year of the last BMDR during Barack Obama’s tenure as US President – the missile threats facing the US have “got worse”, Mr Clark said.

He said: “Over time the things that we were concerned about in 2010 have got worse.
