Shocking scenes of Birmingham show the huge scale of rainfall that has swept through the city during the bank holiday weekend.

While parts of the country experience scorching temperatures, Birmingham saw more than a month’s rainfall in just one hour on Sunday.

The flash flooding has forced drivers to abandon their cars in the middle of the flooded roads, while emergency services work to evacuate people from their homes.

Forecasters have warned the the flash floods and huge storms that have battered the Midlands are a “danger to life”.

In the West Midlands a person was rushed to hospital after they were rescued from a car submerged in floodwater.

The Environment Agency has more than 20 flood warnings and more than 40 flood alerts in place covering much of Central England.

Police have advised drivers not to ignore road closure signs, with one major route in the city left impassable by floodwater up to 5ft deep.

The Met Office said a site at Winterbourne, in Edgbaston, recorded 58mm of rainfall in just one hour on Sunday afternoon, and 81mm in a 12-hour period.
