Kilauea volcano is entering its 20th day of eruption and is showing no signs of easing, with repeated explosions at its summit and fountains of lava up to 160 feet (50m) from giant cracks or fissures on its flank.

Lava continues to edge towards a geothermal power plant on Tuesday after destroying an old warehouse near the facility, County of Hawaii Civil Defense said.

An explosive eruption was recorded at the Kilauea summit at 3.45am HST which sent ash to a height of 8,000 feet (2,438m) over Hawaii’s Big Island.

The fissures are producing 15,000 tonnes a day of toxic sulphur dioxide, a level much higher than see in recent times.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said eruption of lava and ground cracking continues in the area of Leilani Estates subdivision.

The USGS said: “The most eruptive activity in the Lower East Rift Zone shifted to the middle portion of the system of fissures.

“The most active fissures were 22, 19, 6, 5 and 23. Fissure 17, at the northeastern end of the fissure system, is only weakly active now.

“Fissure 6 is feeding a flow to the south, roughly parallel to the western flow from fissure 22.
