Hawaii volcano Kilauea violently erupted again last week, spewing giant rocks and a huge plume of volcanic ash.

The volcano has been erupting for the last fortnight after a series of earthquakes dislodged the crater floor.

Lava flows have now spread towards the coast, mixing toxic hydrochloric acid into the atmosphere.

The latest activity sent a giant cloud of ash spiraling more than six miles into the air, putting thousands of lives in danger across the northeast of Hawaii’s Big Island.

So far, 22 fissures have opened up in Puna, oozing lava rivers into the Leilani Estates. The lava has destroyed more than 50 homes and structures so far, spreading more than 10 miles around the base of the volcano.

What is the latest news from Kilauea?
Lava rivers from Kilauea have now reached the coast, slipping into the Pacific Ocean and giving scientists cause for concern over the air quality in the area.

The lava flow mixes with the water, producing steam that is full of hydrochloric acid and fine glass particles that can be toxic and lethal to humans.

The toxic mist is now mixing with the giant ash cloud that erupted from the Kilauea summit last week, spreading further north on stronger trade winds.

Scientists from the USGS have warned that the toxic fumes could be pushed north across Big Island, putting many more people’s lives in danger.
