The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has caused devastation for many residents as the huge lava flows destroy dozens of homes – with one man being seriously injured after a lava splatter “shattered” his shin.

Shocking aerial footage from Paradise Helicopters shows a huge stream of lava engulf the rural Hawaii landscape while leaving behind a path of destruction.

So far, 22 fissures have opened up in lower Puna and merged into a massive fast-moving lava flow.

The devastating lava flow has ignited smouldering forest fires and thousands of residents have been forced to leave their homes.

The lava has now reached the Pacific Ocean, which can prove hazardous for those living near the ocean.

A Hawaii county spokesman said: “The lava has entered the ocean. Be aware of the laze hazard and stay away from any ocean plume.

“Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air.

“Health hazards of laze include lung, eye and skin irritation.

“Be aware that the laze plume travels with the wind and can change direction without warning.
