A series of earthquake have hit the region of Hawaii close to the Kilauea volcano, amid warnings from experts that the volatile site could unleash a huge eruption at any moment.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has also revealed that the rate of eruptions on Big Island has increased in recent days.

The latest earthquakes, which registered at 4.9, 3.6 and 2.7 magnitude in the space of just a few hours today, will add to the growing fears in Hawaii.

According to the US Geological Survey, one of the quakes had a depth of 8km, fueling concern over movement beneath the surface of the island.

Earlier today, the volcanic disaster in Hawaii claimed its first serious injury after a man’s leg “shattered” from lava splatter.

A spokeswoman for the county mayor said that man was sitting on a balcony at his home when the projectile molten rock landed on him.

She added: “It hit him on the shin and shattered everything there down on his leg.”

According to the mayor, lava splatters can weigh as much as a refrigerator.
