FAST-MOVING lava has surrounded 40 homes in Hawaii as the Kilauea volcano’s explosive eruptions continue to wreak havoc on Big Island where the airspace ban was extended.

Witnesses of the latest lava fissure in Hawaii have described how the strength of Kilauea volcano ripped a small crack in the ground into a lava-spewing crater.

Local residents also revealed how the windows and doors in their homes have turned orange from the level of toxic gas.

This comes as the 22nd fissure on the island opened up, according to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO)

Authorities have issued a new warning to evacuate nearby areas, while they handed out nearly 20,000 masks to protect residents.

US Geological Survey scientists said they can no longer predict when the eruptions will end after admitting the eruptions are set to stay for now.

The HVO said volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high and additional explosions are possible at any time.

Amid fears of ongoing eruptions, the Federal Aviation Administration extended a restriction on aircraft from entering the airspace up to 30,000 feet above sea level.

This has prompted fears of a ban on flights in the area, on top of the airspace prohibition which has been placed on a five-mile radius around the volcano.

The latest lava, which isolated 40 homes yesterday, forced at least four people to be evacuated by helicopters.

Volcanologist Janine Krippner of Concord University in West Virginia said: “Trying to understand when a volcano is going to stop erupting is nearly impossible, because the processes driving that fall below the surface and we can’t see them.”

Tom Shea, a volcanologist at the University of Hawaii, added: “We have no way of knowing whether this is really the beginning or toward the end of this eruption.

“We’re kind of all right now in this world of uncertainty.”
