The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported a huge steam explosion in the Halemaumau Crater around midnight yesterday, after the National Weather Service spotted plumes of ash rising above the volcanic crater.

Residents have been warned to protected themselves from the ash plumes, as winds blew sediments of ash southwest towards kau, Pahala and Naleehu.

Authorities have advised locals to remain indoors or wear dust masks at all times when outdoors.

Hawaii Big Island’s volcano continues to erupt as large amounts of laval flow through fissures at its sides, producing a slow moving lava flow and threatening a possible unforeseen eruption of the Big Island’s volcano.

Four homes have been destroyed so far, but other residential areas, including Highway 137, remain unthreatened.

Officials have told residents from Isaac Hale Beach Park to prepare to vacate the area in light of an emergency evacuaion.

Pohoiki Road has been closed off while Highway 132 and 130 remain open for oncoming traffic.
