WHO said a confirmed case of the disease in the Congolese city – which has a population it estimates at 1.2million – was “very concerning”.

A spokesman told Daily Star Online that now the virus has spread to a large Urban area, it runs the risk of a 2014 epidemic repeat.

He said: “The appearance of a confirmed case in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million, is very concerning.

“WHO and partners are working together to rapidly scale up the search for all contacts of the confirmed case in the area.

“Controlling a virus once it has reached a large urban area is particularly challenging.

“The last big Ebola outbreak in 2014-15 showed the devastation that can occur when the virus gains a foothold in an urban setting.”

WHO today reported 24 “probable or suspected” Ebola deaths and one confirmed fatality resulting from the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is from 45 confirmed, probable or suspected cases since the outbreak rocked DRC this year.

Today the organisation is to hold an emergency meeting where bosses will consider declaring the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern”.
