The capital has seen an “appalling escalation” in “heinous crimes” including killings, robberies and burglaries, according to the research.

There were 157 homicides in 2017/18, a 44% rise compared to 109 in the previous year.

And the number of youth victims rocketed by 30% up from 26 to 34 in the past 12 months.

It comes just weeks after London was found to have a higher murder rate than New York for the first time in history.

Worrying stats released by the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee also revealed how personal robbery was by 36%, from around 22,500 to more than 30,000.

Home burglary victims leapt 33% to over 58,000.

Committee chairman Steve O’Connell described the crime wave as “deeply troubling”.

“The Mayor of London and the Met need to take urgent practical steps to address these crimes, all of which are a third up from this time last year,” Mr O’Connell said.

“Our committee will be asking what steps are being taken to keep Londoners safe and reverse this appalling escalation in crime.”
