Andrew Neil launched into a dazzling rant explaining how Brexit had redefined the nature of traditional British politics.
The BBC This Week host argued that “every corner” of politics in the UK has been “permeated” by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.
Mr Neil said: “We confirm Brexit now permeates, some might say infects, every corner of our politics, even the local elections.
“They’re supposed to be about rubbish collection and potholes and schools and social care but last week they were overshadowed by Brexit.
“If you were a Leaver, you were more likely to swing to the Tories however big the potholes. A Remainer? Then more likely to lean Labour no matter if the bins remain uncollected.”
He added: “That’s not all: the latest national poll suggests that the Tories – the Tories! – now enjoy a lead among working-class voters while Labour, under it most left-wing leadership ever, enjoys considerable support among the prosperous professional middle-class. If that isn’t Brexit up-ending the traditional pattern of British politics, I don’t know what is.”
Mr Neil also pointed out how the Brexit vote had affected party unity among Conservatives and Labour alike.
Theresa May faces pressure from a split Cabinet divided over the future EU trade deal while Jeremy Corbyn has been trying to rein in anti-Brexit Lords defying party whips to keep Britain aligned to the EU customs union and the single market.
