A 14-year-old student is in custody accused of shooting a boy of the same age in the arm at a California high school.

Deputies swarmed Highland High School at 7am PT after receiving ‘numerous reports’ of a man with a gun and arrested a ‘Hispanic juvenile’ around 20 minutes later at a Vons grocery store. A rifle was found discarded in the desert nearby.

The victim, also a student, was shot through the forearm and was taken to hospital where it is in a non-serious condition.

The shooting happened during ‘period zero’, when extra classes take place before the normal 7.30am start.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing students running out of the building.

Ricky Munoz, 23, dropped his two younger brothers and a friend off at the school around that time.

‘About a minute later, I get a call from them saying there were gunshots,’ Munoz told CNN.

Students began barricading themselves in their classrooms and piling sofas and desks in front of the doors, according to one parent.

Dozens of cop cars swarmed the high school and began going from classroom to classroom.

At around 9am, the Sheriff’s Department tweeted to say Highland High School had been cleared and a gun recovered.

Deputies also responded to reports of a shooter at Manzanita Elementary School seven miles away but these were found to be false.
